Oh, well!

Did you know that Chad Stayrook is the only person in the whole world who has the keys that open the garage doors of the studio where the Caravan is? We didn't! Did you know that Chad Stayrook is presently out of town? We sure didn't know that, either! So, after all that hard work, all those sprained wrists, all the glue stuck in my hair, the Caravan itself is held prisoner in the Heimbold sculpture studio. And as such it is going to have to miss the party tomorrow.

But we'll be there! And we'll have art, photos, information, zines, candy, and more! Most importantly, we'll have all sorts of truly radical materials for our community art enterprise, the Flag Project.

So COME! Make some art! Hey, it's a goddamn PARTY in the STREETS of the SUBURBS -- there will be HOT DOGS and SNOW CONES and stuff. Bring any recycled materials (old clothes, magazines, paper, glitter, whatever else) you might wanna craft with, and bring any instruments you might wanna make beautiful music with!

See you tomorrow, puppies.

Mission Statement

The Patchwork Caravan is a traveling art collective founded by four college students in Bronxville, New York in 2007. We are committed to the idea that art can and should happen anywhere - not just in galleries and museums. To this end we have constructed a small house on a trailer bed; the house unfolds into an exhibition/performance/community art space where we will share our art (visual, written, musical, et cetera) and that of others. We will also use the space for performances, workshops, community discussions, and so on. In the summer of 2008 we will tow the Caravan throughout the greater New York area, setting up impromptu art shows and public installation projects in street fairs, backyards, street corners and anywhere and everywhere else. In the future, we intend to tow the Caravan across the country to a variety of different independent DIY houses, exhibiting the work of arts we have met along the way. The chronicling of these events will become part of the content of future exhibitions.

A second aspect of our project is intended to encourage collaborative, community-based art. At each stop the Caravan makes, we will provide an inviting space where people can create art while appreciating the works of others. We call this the Flag Project: we will be asking for personal "maps" and "flags" of our guests' towns and neighborhoods, to be made with a variety of recycled media. These maps and mementos will not only be exhibited at future events, but will also be copied and collected into a tangible document. This project is designed to nurture a strong sense of regional identity, but is consciously within our traveling caravan, and thus it reinforces a sense of a greater artistic community.

We believe that our guerilla-style street installations, combined with the Flag Project's necessary community participation will inspire and excite audiences to reexamine their personal definitions of art and the artistic community.
